About the Akron History Center

The Akron History Center Inc. is a not-for-profit 501 © (3) tax-exempt organization. The Center is operated in collaboration with the Akron-Summit County Public Library Special Collections Division and the Summit County Historical Society. This is the first time that residents and visitors can view Akron’s 200-year history in one place, interpreted through its relics using modern technology. Located in The Bowery on King James Way, adjacent to Lock 4 and the Towpath of the Ohio & Erie Canal. Three floors showcase 62 exhibits, more than 100 artifacts, and 30 flat screen videos, punctuated with striking graphics. The Akron Pubic Library and other community partners including the University of Akron Archives, the Lighter-Than-Air Society, and many private donors have also contributed artifacts and historic content for the exhibits throughout the museum. The Center’s mission is to create an enduring legacy to Akron’s history, inspire residents, educate young people, and welcome visitors to our community.

Our Mission: The Akron-Summit County Public Library provides resources for learning and leisure, information services, meeting spaces, and programs for all ages that support, improve, and enrich individual, family, and community life.
