In Summit County there are 82,740 food insecure people, including 23,320 children. Food insecurity refers to the USDA’s measure of lack of regular access to nutritional food for an active and healthy life.
At the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, they solicit, store and distribute food and other essential items to network partners in eight Northeast Ohio counties: Carroll, Holmes, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit, Tuscarawas and Wayne. These network partners operate 500 food pantries, hot meal sites, shelters and other hunger-relief programs in the neighborhoods and communities where people need food. Last year the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank provided 9,649,801 meals in Summit County and distributed 2,706,187 pounds of food.
