Census Resources

The library provides free access to Federal Population Schedules from 1790 to 1940 through three databases: Ancestry Library Edition, which is available from within any Akron-Summit County Public Library, as well as Heritage Quest and My Heritage / World Vital records, which are available from any library or any computer with internet access using an ASCPL card. All databases may be accessed using the links on our Research Databases page.

Special Collections also has several non-population schedules for Summit County available on microfilm. Links to online indexes to these schedules are provided below. If you find a name in an index and would like to request copies of the pages pertaining to that person, contact us.

Akron Beacon Journal Obituary Indexes (1937 - present)

These indexes contain names of deceased individuals and the date(s) their obituaries were published in the Akron Beacon Journal. To request a copy of an obituary cited in the indexes, please contact us. For obituaries prior to 1937, see our Akron Beacon Journal Subject Indexes (1841-1939), as well as the Hayes Research Library’s Ohio Obituary Index , which allows you to search across all years. You may also want to check the Barberton Public Library's obituary indexes to Barberton newspapers .

Text-only versions of Akron Beacon Journal articles 1984-present are available with an ASCPL library card through NewsBank . You may search the Akron Beacon Journal 1872-present  through Newspapers.com, but you must have a private subscription to view articles.

Akron Beacon Journal Subject Indexes (1841-1939)

Only partial indexes exist for some years prior to 1890. Obituaries may be found under the heading for "deaths" or under the last name of the individual. Murders, accidents or other deaths by violence are indexed under the person’s name; divorces are generally found under the names of the parties involved. To request a copy of an article cited in the indexes, please contact us.
