Branch Library Manager*

Responsibilities:

Manages all branch operations, including interviewing, scheduling, evaluating, and training of branch employees; manages the branch facility, including overseeing the general building maintenance; maintains positive public relations with the community by promoting library services, working closely with The Friends group and developing rapport with customers, key community leaders and organizations; develops library programs for children, young adults or adults; oversees children, young adult and adult materials collections, and branch book inventory; provides general reference services to customers, including readers’ advisory and book talks, and performs other tasks as necessary.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Proven aptitude in professional library science, preferably in a public library setting, including a comprehensive knowledge of reference sources, reader interest levels, books and authors; demonstrated supervisory skills; ability to assess community interests and needs and develop programs and services accordingly; excellent customer service skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; professional presentation skills and sound professional judgment.  A Master of Library and Information Science degree issued by an ALA-accredited school of library and information science and extensive professional librarian experience are required.

Librarian - Early Childhood

Hours: Job-Share (22.5 hours), including evening and weekend hours
Salary: Grade 11, $19.96/hour

Responsibilities:

Provides services to the age group of infants through age eight, including: collection maintenance and marketing; planning and conducting programs; actively representing the Library through visits to schools, pre-schools, day care centers, and Head Start programs; establishing sustained community engagement relationships with local  organizations and agencies; providing reference and readers’ advisory; creating an attractive and appealing children’s area; cooperating closely with the Intermediate/YA Librarian in providing family and multi-age programming; performing daily circulation routines; supervising the branch in the absence of the Branch Manager, and performing other tasks as assigned.    

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of professional library science including familiarity with reference and bibliographic resources in the early childhood areas; good knowledge of reader interest levels, publishers and their practices and a good knowledge of child development; ability to develop programs; good research skills; ability to speak and write effectively; sound professional judgment; ability to direct the work of others; and good customer relation skills including a pleasing personality and the ability to get along well with others.  A Master of Library and Information Science degree issued by an ALA-accredited school of library and information science is required and some previous library experience is preferred.  Applicants with 6 credit hours or less towards completion of the MLIS will also be considered under certain conditions.  Individuals hired under these conditions will begin as a Public Service Assistant III, Grade 10, Step 1 ($19.42/hr), and upon confirmation of completion of the MLIS degree will be moved to Librarian, Grade 11, Step 1 ($19.96/hr).

Substitute Public Service Assistant

The Akron-Summit County Public Library is seeking qualified applicants to substitute in the branches and Main Library for Public Service Assistant positions. Qualified candidates must have recent library experience (preferably in a public library setting). Applicants must have completed at least two years of college to work as a PSA. Former ASCPL employees will be considered, as well as current employees of other library systems. Hours may also include evenings and weekends and are not set or guaranteed as substitutes will be called on an “as-needed” basis. Candidates with the flexibility to report to work within two hours of being called and those with reliable transportation are desired. Training will be provided.

Responsibilities:

Assists customers in the routine selection and location of library materials and in utilizing library technology; answers routine reference questions; registers borrowers; performs routine circulation duties; maintains circulation records; collects fines and charges for payment of lost materials; performs opening and closing routines; performs a variety of clerical tasks and other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

An interest in and aptitude for library work; willingness to learn professional library techniques; good customer-relation skills, including a pleasing personality and ability to work well with others; record-keeping ability; ability to perform simple typing/PC tasks with reasonable speed and accuracy; ability to handle delivery bags weighing 25 lbs. and push book carts loaded with materials with or without reasonable accommodation; customer service experience, recent library experience, and completion of two years of college required; and possession of a bachelor’s degree preferred.
