Lives in Akron, Ohio
Melissa Markwald paints larger than life portraits of average people, turning them into iconic figures. Before beginning these large portraits, Markwald creates smaller abstract compositions, such as Abstract Portrait. These small-scale works allow her to experiment with ideas and techniques before transferring them to her conceptual work. According to Markwald, this alleviates “the pressure of producing work.” The subject of this painting is an anonymous soldier, the date of the photograph and the wars in which he fought are unknown.
Markwald is a Security Guard and Exhibition Technician at the Akron Art Museum. She is also a recent graduate of the Myers School of Art at the University of Akron, earning a BFA in Painting and Drawing. Her work has been shown throughout Northeast Ohio at numerous galleries and museums, as well as the Curated Storefronts of Downtown Akron. Markwald’s studio is located at Summit Artspace.
