Money Smart Week 2018

Mark your calendar for a public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances. Presented in cooperation with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the American Library Association.

Saturday, April 21

11 am - 12 pm: Financial Literacy

Kathleen Seminatore, Investigator, Summit County Office of Consumer Affairs, will discuss how to improve your credit score, lower your bills, set up a monthly budget, apply for PIPP and HEAP, avoid scams, and much more.

12:15 - 12:45 pm: Financial Empowerment

Angela Lowery, Manager of the Akron Financial Empowerment Center, will explain FREE one-on-one financial coaching services focused on credit score improvement, debt reduction, increased saving and asset building, and banking access. The Financial Empowerment Center is a program of the City of Akron in partnership with United Way of Summit County.

11 am - 1 pm: SHRED IT!

Use this free on-site paper shredding event to purge financial clutter and other documents and help deter identity theft. Outside Main Library on High Street. Limit: 10 copy paper size boxes or 10 kitchen size trash bags.

1 - 2 pm: Helpful Assistance from EANDC

Speaker Holly Calhoun from East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation will speak about possible assistance available for housing, appliances, energy services and even some free things.

1 - 2 pm: Social Security Benefits

Robert Fenn II, Public Affairs Specialist, Social Security Administration, will answer the following questions: What is the quickest way to file benefits? Can you work and still receive benefits? Do you have to file for Medicare? At what age can you file? Can you file on a previous spouse’s record?

3 - 4:30 pm: Protect Yourself Online

Terry Supancic of AARP will discuss AARP’s Fraud Watch Network. Discover what you should never do on public WiFi, how, why and when to get a security freeze on your credit file, and other tips for protecting yourself from fraud and scams in the cyber world.
