About the Artist

Mark Mothersbaugh
American, born 1950, Akron, Ohio
Lives in Los Angeles, California

In his Beautiful Mutant series, Mark Mothersbaugh manipulates antique photographs using contemporary, digital techniques. Referencing Rorschach blotter diagrams, Mothersbaugh alters the original image to create mirrored mutants. These faces emphasize the myth of human bilateral symmetry, revealing that no one’s face is truly symmetrical. In a possible nod to his DEVO roots, the musician and artist claims that humans are “closer to potatoes in their lack of precise symmetry.”

A visual artist, composer and musician, who is best known for his role in the rock band DEVO, Mothersbaugh’s retrospective MYOPIA travelled to the Akron Art Museum in 2016. The artist’s sculpture Rubber Custard is also in the museum’s collection.
