Revenue Reduction Prompts Library Hours Change
December 16, 2013
After five years of declining revenue and staff reductions, another anticipated loss in state funding in 2014 has made it necessary for the Akron-Summit County Public Library to reduce its hours of public service.
Beginning on Monday, January 6, 2014, Library hours will change to the following:
Main Library Hours
Monday - Thursday: 10 am - 8 pm
Main Library will be closed on Sundays in the summer from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
Branch Library Hours
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 10 am - 8 pm
Saturday bookmobile service will be cancelled.
Library program times may change. Please check with your local library before attending.
In 2014, the Library expects to receive approximately $450,000 less in state funding than in 2013. Due to continued reductions in state funding since 2009 and real estate property devaluation, the Library's overall annual revenue is now $4.4 million (16%) less than in 2008.
From Library Director David Jennings:
Recognized six times since 2008 as a Star Library by Library Journal, the Akron-Summit County Public Library consists of Main Library, 17 branch libraries, and three Mobile Services vehicles. In a typical year the Library has 3 million visitors to library facilities, loans 5.7 million items, welcomes 250,000 people to library programs and meetings, and has 900,000 logins to library computers.
