Librarian

Salary: Grade 11, $19.96/hour

Responsibilities:

Performs a variety of professional library duties as related to the centralized selection development, and maintenance of the Library’s collection.  Selects appropriate materials in assigned areas.  Identifies materials for purchase by reading reviews, reviewing advertisements and publisher/vendor catalogs, and meeting with vendors; monitors best seller lists; assesses customer requests and staff suggestions and analyzes statistical data.  Serves as a system-wide expert in specific collection areas and/or formats.  Assists customers at public service desks as required.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Candidates will possess demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of library science as they apply to collection development and intellectual freedom; excellent customer service skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to think and work independently; ability to speak and write effectively; and sound professional judgment. Experience with public library service and collection development required. A Master of Library and Information Science degree from an ALA-accredited school of Library and Information Science required.  Travel between Main Library and branches required.  Customer service experience preferred. Ohio Public Library Certification preferred.

Deputy Director

The Akron-Summit County Public Library is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Deputy Director. Founded in 1874, the Library consists of a 274,000 sq. ft. Main Library, 18 branch libraries and two Bookmobiles. With a current full and part-time staff of 400, and an annual budget of $38.7 million, the Library served over 303,500 registered borrowers and had 2.2 million visitors in 2017. Reporting to the Director of the Library system, the Deputy Director is responsible for the overall day-to-day public service operations of both Main and branch libraries, system-wide youth and adult services, and the supporting departments of Collection Development and Technical Services, and other supporting departments and functions. The incumbent will be involved in the planning and decision-making for most areas of the Library’s functioning, and will provide leadership in the absence of the Director. Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, ensuring the overall administration and operation of the Library; resolving both routine and non-routine issues in a timely manner; overseeing the preparation and analysis of a variety of reports; participating in the budgeting process; participating in the selection process for all Main Library division management and branch management positions; participating in other personnel decisions; and representing the Library in community organizations and state and national library associations.

Qualifications include, but are not limited to, a minimum of three to five years of professional public library experience at the management level or above required; a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited program; certification by the Ohio Library Council as a Certified Public Librarian or eligibility for such certification preferred; proven leadership skills; excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to build consensus; ability to analyze community needs and to develop and maintain collections and programs to meet those needs; and ability to represent the Library in a positive manner to a wide variety of agencies, organizations.

Salary is commensurate with experience and ranges from $79,579 to the mid-point of $93,717. The benefit package includes medical, dental, and vision insurance; participation in the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS); generous vacation and sick leave; and flexible health and dependent care spending account options. Executive Administrative Assistant

Responsibilities:

Provides administrative support to the Director and Deputy Director. Duties include performing confidential work requiring a high level of judgment and discretion. Serves as receptionist for and facilitates access to the Director, including scheduling and coordinating meetings and appointments and maintaining calendar; provides back-up support to the Human Resources Assistant and Administrative reception desk as needed; composes and types miscellaneous correspondence for the Director and Deputy Director; maintains the Director’s office files; assists the Director in preparing for monthly Board meetings, including preparing, assembling, and distributing agendas and meeting packets; contacts Board members to confirm attendance at committee and Board meetings; sets up for and cleans up after Board and committee meetings, including preparing/providing coffee, water, and refreshments; attends Board and committee meetings, records and takes minutes and transcribes meeting minutes; attends administrative team meetings and takes, prepares, and distributes minutes; coordinates posting of approved Board reports to the Library website as directed; assists in preparing responses to public records requests; and other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to work with and maintain confidential information; ability to manage and follow through with multiple projects and tasks simultaneously; ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, Library staff and customers; ability to demonstrate professionalism at all times, including when interacting with persistent and/or dissatisfied customers or employees; ability to prioritize, plan, and organize work effectively to ensure accurate, thorough, and timely completion of assignments; ability to remain calm under pressure; ability to adjust work schedule and remain flexible to meet changing work needs and demands; strong interpersonal skills, including excellent verbal and written communication skills; accurate and proficient typing and proofreading skills; demonstrated PC experience, including proficiency with multiple software packages and ability to learn new software quickly; knowledge of principles and practices of office management; previous customer service experience; minimum of 10 years of experience in an Executive Administrative Assistant role, or Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university and 5 years of experience in an Executive Administrative Assistant role, or equivalent combination of education and experience; valid Ohio driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and continuous insurability required.

Public Service Assistant II

Responsibilities:

Work involves performing a variety of Library support functions/paraprofessional duties requiring specialized knowledge and experience with technology, including, but not limited to computers, software, emerging technologies such as the makerspace equipment available in the TechZone@Main, and the Internet; assisting customers in using Library provided technology and technology owned by the customer; assisting customers in using software, the Internet, Maker equipment, and related applications; assisting and instructing customers with computer skills in person, by phone, and email. 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

An interest in and aptitude for library work in a technology-based setting; ability to effectively troubleshoot basic computer, device, and software problems; excellent customer relation skills, including pleasant phone manner;  advanced level computer skills and aptitude for effectively helping customers with a variety of hardware and software; knowledge of all MS Windows/Microsoft Office products, electronic communication, database use, and Internet use; ability to learn and adapt to new and updated software, procedures and Maker equipment; ability to give instruction effectively; ability to interact patiently with and provide service in a manner which is respectful to customers of all ages; cultures, socioeconomic levels, and levels of computer knowledge; and ability to effectively multi-task. Eligibility to become a passport agent and a notary and High School Diploma or G.E.D. required; completion of two years of college preferred or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience. Previous library work experience preferred. Previous work experience in a computer lab preferred.  Previous customer service experience required.
