Borrowing Library Materials

REGISTERING FOR A LIBRARY CARD

Anyone living, working, or attending school in Ohio may obtain a FREE library card by registering at Main Library, a branch library, or the bookmobile. Children may obtain a library card with the consent of a parent or legal guardian. When applying for a card, we prefer to see a photo ID with current address. Since that is not always possible, we will accept a photo ID and another form of current address verification, such as a piece of mail.

LOAN PERIODS

All items are circulated to the public for 14 days, except the following:

  • Videocassettes 7 nights
  • DVDs 7 nights
  • Books in Boxes 28 days maximum
  • Reference books 1 day
    on Special Loan

ITEM LIMITS

Number of Items Out

There is no limit to the number of books that a customer may have out on their record, as long as they are not over the $10.00 fine limit. A customer may check out 2 Books in Boxes, 5 CD-ROMS, 2 Kits for Kids, 10 videos, 10 DVDs, and 10 audio items in a single day. A customer may have no more than 2 Books in Boxes, 5 CD-ROMs, 2 Kits for Kids, 20 videos, 20 DVD’s, and 50 audio items on their borrower’s record at any one time.

Reference Material

The manager or person in charge may choose to let a reference item circulate for a brief period, The due date needs to be “changed,” because a desk reference item will not check out at all and the regular reference for only one day. A librarian at Main may also agree to send a reference item out to a branch for their patron to look at but not check out.

Maximum Fines

The maximum fine for any item is the replacement cost of that item. Average replacement costs for different formats have been set for items not having an identifiable replacement cost.

Notification

Customers are informed of holds and overdue items via the telephone, mail, or e-mail. Customers who owe $75 or more receive a bill for the fines due through a collection agency.

Service Charge

The processing fee or service charge remains at $5.00 per item for lost or damaged materials. This fee is not refunded if the item is recovered: only the replacement cost is refunded.

The $5.00 service fee applies to each lost item; it is not $5.00 total for all the lost items on a patron's record.

NOTICES
Frequency

Two notices will be sent to delinquent borrowers (the second notice is the bill).

CLAIMED RETURNED

Customers are allowed only two claimed returned items. If the item claimed to be returned is not found by the Library in six months, the material goes into lost status and the customer is responsible for paying to replace it.

Holds may be placed on materials in person, by telephone, or via the Library Catalog link on the Internet: www.akronlibrary.org. However, Books-in-Boxes must be reserved in person or by telephone.
