Description
In 1871, the Center School District erected a two-story, four-room building that housed grades one through eight. After this building burned in January of 1878, a new Center school that included high school as well as lower and upper grammar classes was built. This new Center school was a two-story, four-room frame structure located on the site of the current junior high school complex on North Road. The first principal was Martha J. Maltby, who taught for eight years. The first class graduated in 1879 with eight graduates, and the Tallmadge Alumni Association was organized during the reception following commencement. When the school had to be repaired in 1891 and 1910, classes met in the Town Hall. A new eight-room brick school was completed adjacent to the original frame high school in 1911, and the frame building was razed in 1912 by Albert Walters, who used salvaged materials from the school in the construction of his home at 207 Northwest Avenue. Around 1916, Tallmadge schools were centralized, and all pupils a mile or more from the Center school were brought to the school in “kid wagons.” The brick high school later became a junior high building.
