Description
Tallmadge Academy was constructed in 1814 and 1815 and incorporated by an act of the General Assembly of the State of Ohio on February 27, 1816. It stood on the Tallmadge Circle site currently occupied by the Congregational Church. The Academy continued to prepare scholars from across the Western Reserve for college until 1876, when the high school was organized. Elizur Wright, Sr. (1762-1845), who moved to Tallmadge from Connecticut in 1810 and was the first deacon of the Congregational Church, was among the individuals responsible for the Academy’s creation and instruction.
