Description
By 1900, the dairy industry was an important part of Tallmadge’s economy. Many individual farmers offered their milk to distributors, and before pasteurization was required, several also operated local milk delivery routes. Pictured here with the milkwagon of the Maple Grove Dairy are (from left) John Shwab, hired hand; Marie Schaubin Martin with Jacob Martin V in her arms; and Jacob Martin IV, who established and ran the dairy from 1923 to 1928. In addition to the dairy, Jacob also had a route delivering milk along Southwest Avenue. The increasing regulations caused Jacob to halt the route in 1926.
