Description
The mining of coal was very important to the early economy of Tallmadge. First discovered in 1808, it was being marketed successfully to Cleveland companies by the 1830s. Many Welshman seeking better work conditions came to Tallmadge to work in these early mines. This 1917 Sheriff's Deed documents a decision by Judge Fritch which established that “the Thomas family owned all the coal rights in Tallmadge Township."
