Description
The Oviatt, Sperry & Ritchie Carriage Manufactory began as a partnership between blacksmith, William C. Oviatt; wagon maker, Amos Avery; and Isaac Robinson in 1827. The partnership between Oviatt and Ira P. Sperry formed in 1836 under the name, Oviatt and Sperry Carriage Works. Samuel J. Ritchie entered the partnership shortly after the Civil War. The widely acclaimed firm was located between the home of Ira P. Sperry and the spot formerly occupied by the Hillegas Funeral Home (currently Donovan Funeral Home). The factory closed in 1870 when competition from factories producing machine-manufactured carriages put it out of business.
