Description
Soon after settlers arrived, it became necessary for each owner to identify his livestock.  For that reason, individual ear marks were registered for each inhabitant who owned cattle, sheep, or swine.  The registration page shown here includes both a description of each owner’s mark as well as a drawing to illustrate it.  The description of the mark for Nathaniel Chapman, registered on February 2, 1809, reads “a square crop off the end of the right ear and a halfpenny the underside of same”.  Note that mark number four on this list, which was originally registered to Aaron Norton, was later “taken by Moses McDimick”, suggesting Mr. Norton had left the area thus making the mark available.
