Description
Prior to 1900, there was no mail delivery service for residents of Tallmadge; everyone had to travel to either the Middlebury or Cuyahoga Falls post offices to receive their mail.  In 1900, the Rural Free Delivery (RFD) was established. Joseph Myers served as Tallmadge mail carrier on Route # 19 from 1901 – 1931.  In a 1905 report, he described his job as covering 22 ½ miles daily except Sundays.  At the time, he handled approximately 5000 pieces of mail per month and was paid $720.  He furnished his own horse and wagon. One anecdote retold by Mrs. H.O. King demonstrates how conscientious Joe Myers was about his job.  She related that in the early days of Route #19, Mr. Myers phoned Mrs. King’s mother one Saturday afternoon and said:
“Mrs. Luneman, you are having company for dinner Sunday.”
“Oh, I guess not,” responded Mrs. L.
"Yes you are” said Mr. Myers, “I forgot to leave a card this morning that says --- family will be there for dinner tomorrow.”
