Description
A fatal wreck at the Tallmadge station was reported among the “Reminiscences of 1883” at the 14 January 1884 annual meeting of the Tallmadge Historical Society. “John Bull, an engineer on an Express train was killed by colliding with a freight on the siding; the switch had been left open and there was no signal. By a noble and heroic self sacrifice he remained at his post until he had applied the brakes and reversed his engine thus saving his train and the lives of scores of passengers his engine being destroyed [along with] four or more freight cars. The Fireman was somewhat injured but saved his life by jumping off. The passengers were greatly frightened and a few injured somewhat but none seriously.”
