George Mitchell Wright was born in Tallmadge and educated at Tallmadge Academy and Western Reserve College.  Before finishing his course at Western Reserve, he left and subsequently began studying law.  He was admitted to the bar in 1873 and conducted an active law practice until 1882.  He spent the next four years working in the United States Geological Survey.  He traveled to Nevada, California and Utah and specialized in volcanic and crystalline rocks. In 1886, he resigned his post and returned to his law practice in Akron, Ohio where he remained until the war with Spain broke out in 1898.

Wright, an officer of the Ohio National Guard; was commissioned in the service of the United States as second lieutenant during the War with Spain, and served as battalion adjutant in the Eight Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry.  Eventually, he sailed on the U.S.S. Yale to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, then on to Puerto Rico. On more than one occasion, Wright was singled out by his commanders for his service under fire.  Having served his country from 13 May 1898 to 21 November 1898, Wright was honorably discharged and once again returned to Akron where he resumed his law practice. 

He continued his service in the Ohio National Guard continued, and achieved the rank of colonel by 1907, serving as adjutant general and chief of staff for nearly eight years.  Col. Wright died on 22 June 1923 of bronchial pneumonia at the age of 75.  He is buried at Tallmadge Cemetery.
