Description
Francis Hanmer Wright was reared in Tallmadge and attended the Tallmadge Academy as well as the Cleveland Agricultural College.  Eventually, he established a dairy business which prospered for twenty-two years.  Early in 1864, the governors of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin offered local troops to the government for a period of 100 days to provide guard duty at forts.  As part of this effort, Company D, 164th Ohio National Guard Infantry Volunteers was formed and served 100 days in the defenses around Washington.  Mr. Wright served in this company as a first lieutenant.  The group is said to have received a personal commendation from President Lincoln on their way home after their 100 days of service had expired.

Records indicate that at least 181 men from Tallmadge served their country during the Civil War.  Many of these veterans are buried at the Tallmadge Cemetery.
