Library History Digital Exhibit
Description
Since 1985, the Akron-Summit County Public Library has sponsored an annual Martin Luther King, Jr. program. Georgia State senator Julian Bond was the first speaker. Other noteworthy speakers include Lerone Bennett, Nikki Giovanni, Derrick Bell, and Vernon Odom, Sr. The library also maintains a Martin Luther King Jr. collection of materials in the History and Humanities Division about the life of Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement. Left to right are Librarian-Director Steven Hawk, Library Board member Dr. Allen F. Killings, Julian Bond, Vernon Odom, Jr., and Library Board member Dr. Raymond Brown.
