Establishing & Growing Tallmadge

As one of Summit County’s first established communites, Tallmadge possesses a rich history. This early settlement of the Western Reserve was founded by Reverend David Bacon, a resident of Connecticut who, in 1806, purchased approximately 12,000 acres from investors, one of whom was Benjamin Tallmadge. Reverend Bacon’s goal was to establish a utopian Puritan settlement that would attract other New Englanders to the Western Reserve.  He arranged to have the land surveyed in November of that year, with 7 ½ acres set aside to create a public square that we now know as Tallmadge Circle.  Rev. Bacon also designed a road system that would connect each part of the community to the circle.
