Description
Microfilming became a popular mechanism for document storage and preservation in the 1930s. Due to its stability and long shelf life, it is still popular today. The microfilm readers from the 1940s have improved over time and today's readers are capable of not only printing the filmed documents but of sending them through electronic mail.
One of the WPA projects completed in Summit County was the microfilming and indexing of the Akron Beacon Journal and its predecessor newspapers. During 1938 and 1939, WPA workers reproduced the papers published from May 1841 to December 1939. In addition, subject indexes were created for 1841-1939. The newspaper and indexes may be found in the Special Collections Division.
