Description
As early as 1944 the Akron Public Library loaned films through its Group Services Division. With the rise in popularity of video cassettes in the 1980s, the Main Library began to circulate videos of all genres. In 1986 the name of this division was officially changed to Audio Visual Services. In the mid 1980s rotating branch video collections were instituted. The Audio Visual Division has greatly expanded to include audiocassettes, CDs, and books on tape and CD. Video recordings remain extremely popular and are available in VHS and DVD. In 2005 the Main Library alone circulated nearly one half million videos and DVDs.
