Description
Included in the original plan for the new Main Library was the development of the corner of Main and Mill Streets as a downtown park. With funds from the Library's Permanent Improvement Fund and the City of Akron, the park was created. A $10,000 donation for a sculpture was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Louis Myers who recommended a sculpture by artist George Sugarman which was temporarily on exhibit at the Akron Art Museum. Additional funding was secured from the National Endowment for the Arts through its program, Works of Art in Public Places. The twelve foot tall, 3,700 pound sculpture was installed and dedicated in September 1976. Roland was relocated to the Fairlawn-Bath Branch in 2004.
