Description
Located behind South Main Street, the Ohio and Erie Canal spurred Akron's growth. Akron's farmers were able to sell their products to more distant markets earning higher prices. More manufactured goods also became available to Akron's residents due to the canal's low cost transportation. Akron hosts 16 locks along the canal which are being preserved and revitalized by organizations such as Cascade Locks and the Ohio & Erie Canalway Association.
