Librarian

Location: Main Library - Collection Development (Children's Materials)
Hours: Full-Time (37.5 hours), possible evenings and weekend hours; not job-share eligible
Salary: Grade 11, $19.96/hour

Responsibilities:

Performs a variety of professional library duties as related to the centralized selection development, and maintenance of the Library’s collection.  Selects appropriate materials in assigned areas.  Identifies materials for purchase by reading reviews, reviewing advertisements and publisher/vendor catalogs, and meeting with vendors; monitors best seller lists; assesses customer requests and staff suggestions and analyzes statistical data.  Serves as a system-wide expert in specific collection areas and/or formats.  Assists customers at public service desks as required.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Candidates will possess demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of library science as they apply to collection development and intellectual freedom; excellent customer service skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to think and work independently; ability to speak and write effectively; and sound professional judgment. Experience with public library service and collection development required. A Master of Library and Information Science degree from an ALA-accredited school of Library and Information Science required.  Travel between Main Library and branches required.  Customer service experience preferred. Ohio Public Library Certification preferred.

Librarian - Adult Services

Location: Firestone Park Branch
Hours: Full-Time (37.5 hours), including evenings and weekend hours
Salary: Grade 11, $19.96/hour

Responsibilities:

Advises and assists customers with the selection, organization, and interpretation of Library materials; plans and conducts adult programs; researches and answers reference questions; compiles bibliographies and locates hard-to-find reference materials; performs collection maintenance duties including creating displays, weeding, and arranging materials for improved access; communicates and collaborates with Centralized Collection Development staff regarding customer and community trends and interests; assists customers in utilizing Library technology; actively engages community agencies and establishes and maintains relationships with these agencies; provides services to special populations; performs standard Library routines, including circulation, delivery and service desk duties; maintains budgets for programs and supplies; and performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of professional library science including familiarity with reference and bibliographic resources in the adult services areas; good knowledge of reader interest levels; good knowledge of publishers and their practices; ability to develop programs; good research skills; ability to speak and write effectively; sound professional judgment; ability to direct the work of others; and good customer relation skills including a pleasing personality and the ability to get along well with others.  A Master of Library and Information Science degree issued by an ALA-accredited school of library and information science is required and some previous library experience is preferred.  Applicants with 6 credit hours or less towards completion of the MLIS will also be considered under certain conditions.  Individuals hired under these conditions will begin as a Public Service Assistant III, Grade 10, Step 1 ($19.42/hr), and upon confirmation of completion of the MLIS degree will be moved to Librarian, Grade 11, Step 1 ($19.96/hr).

Substitute Public Service Assistant

The Akron-Summit County Public Library is seeking qualified applicants to substitute in the branches and Main Library for Public Service Assistant positions. Qualified candidates must have recent library experience (preferably in a public library setting). Applicants must have completed at least two years of college to work as a PSA. Former ASCPL employees will be considered, as well as current employees of other library systems. Hours may also include evenings and weekends and are not set or guaranteed as substitutes will be called on an “as-needed” basis. Candidates with the flexibility to report to work within two hours of being called and those with reliable transportation are desired. Training will be provided.

Responsibilities:

Assists customers in the routine selection and location of library materials and in utilizing library technology; answers routine reference questions; registers borrowers; performs routine circulation duties; maintains circulation records; collects fines and charges for payment of lost materials; performs opening and closing routines; performs a variety of clerical tasks and other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

An interest in and aptitude for library work; willingness to learn professional library techniques; good customer-relation skills, including a pleasing personality and ability to work well with others; record-keeping ability; ability to perform simple typing/PC tasks with reasonable speed and accuracy; ability to handle delivery bags weighing 25 lbs. and push book carts loaded with materials with or without reasonable accommodation; customer service experience, recent library experience, and completion of two years of college required; and possession of a bachelor’s degree preferred.
