Librarian - Early Childhood

Date: June 4, 2018
Location: Firestone Park Branch
Hours: Full-Time (37.5 hours), including evenings and weekend hours
Salary: Grade 11, $19.96/hour

Responsibilities:

Provides services to the age group of infants through age eight, including: collection maintenance and marketing; planning and conducting programs; actively representing the Library through visits to schools, pre-schools, day care centers, and Head Start programs; establishing sustained community engagement relationships with local  organizations and agencies; providing reference and readers’ advisory; creating an attractive and appealing children’s area; cooperating closely with the Intermediate/YA Librarian in providing family and multi-age programming; performing daily circulation routines; supervising the branch in the absence of the Branch Manager, and performing other tasks as assigned.    

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of professional library science including familiarity with reference and bibliographic resources in the early childhood areas; good knowledge of reader interest levels, publishers and their practices and child development; ability to develop programs; good research skills; ability to speak and write effectively; sound professional judgment; ability to direct the work of others; and good customer relation skills including a pleasing personality and the ability to get along well with others.  A Master of Library and Information Science degree issued by an ALA-accredited school of library and information science is required and some previous library experience is preferred.  Applicants with 6 credit hours or less towards completion of the MLIS will also be considered under certain conditions.  Individuals hired under these conditions will begin as a Public Service Assistant III, Grade 10, Step 1 ($19.42/hr), and upon confirmation of completion of the MLIS degree will be moved to Librarian, Grade 11, Step 1 ($19.96/hr).

Public Service Assistant II

Hours: Part-Time (22.5 hours), including evening and weekend hours
Salary: Grade 7, $13.79/hour

Responsibilities:

Assists customers in the routine selection and location of library materials and in utilizing library technology; answers routine reference questions; registers borrowers; performs routine circulation duties; maintains circulation records; collects fines and charges for payment of lost materials; monitors floating collections; performs collection maintenance and merchandising tasks; performs opening and closing routines; performs a variety of clerical tasks and other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

An interest in and aptitude for library work; willingness to learn professional library techniques; good customer-relation skills, including a pleasing personality and ability to work well with others; record-keeping ability; ability to perform simple typing/PC tasks with reasonable speed and accuracy; ability to handle delivery bags and crates and push book carts loaded with materials, with or without reasonable accommodation; customer service experience and completion of two years of college required; previous library work experience and possession of a bachelor’s degree preferred.

Librarian - Adult Services

Responsibilities:

Advises and assists customers with the selection, organization, and interpretation of Library materials; plans and conducts adult programs; researches and answers reference questions; compiles bibliographies and locates hard-to-find reference materials; performs collection maintenance duties including creating displays, weeding, and arranging materials for improved access; communicates and collaborates with Centralized Collection Development staff regarding customer and community trends and interests; assists customers in utilizing Library technology; actively engages community agencies and establishes and maintains relationships with these agencies; provides services to special populations; performs standard Library routines, including circulation, delivery and service desk duties; maintains budgets for programs and supplies; and performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Public Service Assistant II

Assists customers on bookmobiles, vans, in the Mobile Services office and other sites served by MS in the routine selection and location of library materials and in utilizing library technology; provides readers’ advisory; answers routine reference questions; registers borrowers; performs routine circulation duties; maintains circulation records; collects charges for payment of lost materials; performs a variety of clerical tasks and other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

An interest in and aptitude for library work; willingness to learn professional library techniques; good customer relation skills, including a pleasing personality and ability to work well with others; record-keeping ability; ability to perform simple typing/PC tasks with reasonable speed and accuracy; ability to handle delivery crates or bags and push book carts loaded with materials, with or without reasonable accommodation; a valid Ohio Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one; ability to drive Library van or automobiles; a good driving record; insurable driving status at all times; customer service experience and completion of two years of college required; previous library work experience and possession of a bachelor’s degree preferred.
