During the winter and spring of 2014, the Akron-Summit County Public Library, with the support of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, provided healthy after-school snacks (for patrons 18 and younger) at the Highland Square and Odom Branch Libraries.

We are pleased to share that this very successful program has been expanded this school year to include the Library’s nine urban branches and Main Library. Approximately 200 children participate daily, Monday through Thursday. The Library’s After-School Snack Program addresses hunger and brings together children and Library staff in a way that builds strong relationships around time spent together in conversation and community.

“The things I, as well as the other staff, have been noticing is how polite and appreciative the kids are...By giving them these snacks, I think they feel more welcome here. This is something we are doing especially for them. To me this is a win-win situation for all of us, and something that allows us as a staff to build mutual respect and a positive rapport.” —Brian Burch, Branch Manager, Ellet Branch Library
