General Keyword Search:
This search
matches the words you type in the field with the text in the Title, Notes, and Description
fields of each record. You can limit
the results to a specific type of material such as archival or photograph.
Only those records that have all of the words or exact phrase you specify
will be displayed. You may combine
this word or phrase with a specific material type such as photograph, clipping,
archival, etc. If you do not select
a specific material type, you will retrieve all types of material.
This is the most common type of search.
Collection
Search:
This search allows you
to focus your search on a specific collection and retrieve records that match the
keywords and material type you specify.
For example, you may wish to search the Lawrence Collection which contain historical
information about
Tallmadge,
Ohio, for photographs of
Tallmadge Circle.
Name Search:
This search option allows you to search the database by a person’s name and limit
the results by the type of material.
For example, you may want to search for a map referring to Nathaniel Bettes.

Subject Search:
Similar to the name search, this option allows you to search for all of the records
containing a specific subject heading and limit that search to a type of material. For example, you may want to see photographs referring to Airships –
Akron.

Notes:
The Local History Database shares the entries
in the Names and
Subject Heading drop down lists with several other divisions in the library. Consequently, there are several
names and subjects for which you can execute a search that will return no results. As we implement new technology in the
coming years, we hope to resolve this issue.
If you have any questions about a name
or subject, please call 330.643.9030.
Wildcards:
If you are unsure of a spelling or want
to widen your search, consider using a wildcard (%)
in place of a character or word. For
example, searching records relating to World War II may have either WWII or World
War II in the record. To find all of
these records, perform a keyword search for
W%W%II
A wildcard can also be used to help list all of the
items in a collection or all of the items of a certain type in a collection. For example, to see all of the photographs
in the Lawrence Collection simply perform a Collection Search entering a
% in the keyword field and a material type of photograph.
Search Results:
The list of results can be sorted by clicking on the
column headings. This resorts the entire
result set not just the records on the screen.
For example, if you searched for World War II and did not limit the results
by material type, you could sort your result by
material type to group like items together.
You might prefer to sort by date and can do that by clicking on the column
title date.
Clicking on the word
details in the results list will display the whole record.
To print
the results from a search, remember to print each page separately.
Selecting the print command at the first page of the results will print only
that page.
