Visiting Special Collections

Are you planning to visit Special Collections to do research? Whether you live in town or out of state, knowing some information about us ahead of time can help make your trip easier. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Directions and Parking

Visit the Library's hours & location page for a map showing Main Library or use Google Maps.

The High-Market Parking Garage is located next to the Library at the corner of High and Market streets. There is an entrance ramp to Main Library on the first parking level down from High Street. Parking is free on weekends. The parking garage does not accept credit or debit cards.

See Downtown Akron Partnership (DAP) for more information on parking and navigating downtown Akron.

Library Computers

You will need a valid Akron-Summit County Public Library card to use our computers and scanning stations. If you are from out of state, please ask at the reference desk for guest access. Anyone living, working, or attending school in Ohio may obtain a free library card with a current ID. At Main Library, stop at the checkout desk on the first or second floor to obtain a library card.

We provide work tables with outlets and wireless internet access for those bringing laptops.

Copying and Scanning

Most items in our collection may be photocopied or scanned, but some should not because of preservation concerns. Please ask at the reference desk when working with fragile books or items from our archival collections.

We offer microfilm reader/printers and scanners, a photocopier, document scanner, and a hand-held scanner. Computer printouts, photocopies, and microfilm copies are $.05 per page. Please bring change and dollar bills if you wish to make copies or print items from our computers. There is no charge to scan items. To save digital images from our scanning stations, you can use a flash drive, email the images to your own email address, or use a cloud-based service such as Dropbox.

Personal cameras and mobile scanners are permitted.

Food and Drink

No food or beverages are permitted in Special Collections. Beverages with lids are allowed in the rest of the Library. A number of restaurants are located within walking distance or a short drive. Check Downtown Akron Partnership for downtown dining information.

Personal Items

The temperature in the research area may be cool, so you may want to dress in layers. Free self-serve lockers are available for storage of personal items. Simply ask for a key at the reference desk.

Pencils, binders, notebooks, laptops and tablets are welcome. Pens are not permitted while using archival collections. You may also bring purses, backpacks, and similar items into the research area. However, we may ask you to store these items in a locker if you are using archival collections.
